Dealing with the heat is a problem that residents of the U.K rarely have to worry about. However, every now and then we are blessed with some warm weather that makes us miss the cold and rain. But how can we keep cool in the midst of a heatwave?
When it starts to warm up you will hear arguments for and against the opening and shutting of windows, people will start to share their theories on heat moving from high concentration to low etc.
Some people will suggest that you close all south facing windows and open the rest, or similar theories. But what is the best way to keep cool in the heat?
Although opinions will be divided on whether it is best to throw open the windows and blinds and allow the breeze in, or conversely shut everything to block out the sun and heat.
It is actually ‘mostly’ regarded to do both for the best. If the temperature inside is cooler than the outside temperature then close the windows and doors, pull the curtains and draw the blinds, when the outside temperature starts to cool and it becomes warmer inside than out, then throw back those curtains and open your fenestration to allow the cooler air to enter the building.
As you can imagine, how to keep cool is not always so simple as one set of guidelines fits all, as thick dark curtains may actually trap hot air in the room, so feel free to open these up. However, lighter curtains may help to reflect the sun’s rays away from your house, so these can be kept closed.
Safety, home security and protection are key too, only leave windows and doors open when it is safe to do so.
George Barnsdale windows come with a multi-point locking system which offers excellent security standards.
The shade of paint that adorns your frames can also make an impact, again lighter shades will help reflect sunlight and heat away from the house and help you keep cooler in the hotter months. However, when the summer ends, darker shades will help to keep the winter sun insulating your home.

Other advice for coping in hot weather is:
- stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (11-3)
- splash cold water on yourself
- keep hydrated
- avoid excess alcohol
- plan your supplies
- identify the coolest room in your house

If on the other hand you are a sun lover and can’t get enough of the balmy summer weather, although it is still sensible to follow the safety guidelines, but you want to make the most of the summer months, then patio doors make the perfect addition to your home. Joining the inside to the out with beautiful efficiency they also add an element of style that can only be achieved with a French door, bifold or sliding door.
