George Barnsdale: A family business

Our story started in 1884 when a 21-year-old man named George Barnsdale purchased a plot of land in Donington Market Place, which consisted of a house, workshop and a storage shed for timber. He began a small carpentry business that soon built a reputation on quality craftsmanship

The story of George Barnsdale is best told by those who have lived and breathed it all their lives. Our Managing Director Tom Wright remembers running around the factory as a child, watching the dreams of his parents unfold…

Timber Windows and Doors: Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between timber and wood?

Timber is the term typically used for wood that is used in construction. Although all timber is wood, not all wood can be classed as timber, as it needs to meet certain standards in order to be used in the construction of windows, doors, and even buildings. In order to be used for house beams, panels, and other building purposes, the timber used must be durable, high quality, and have been properly prepared.

In short, timber is a structural material, whereas wood is an umbrella term which covers all manner of materials that come from trees — not all of which are suitable for construction.

What are the benefits of timber windows and doors?

There are a number of reasons why people prefer timber windows and doors over other materials like UPVC. Here are just a few:

1. Appearance. Timber windows and doors have a timeless appeal, and come in a range of designs to suit both modern, and classic buildings.
2. Durability. High-quality timber is highly resistant to weather and wear and tear, particularly when it’s properly cared for. Whereas UPVC can become scuffed and cracked over time, timber is hard to damage and can always be refreshed by applying a stain, or a fresh coat of paint.
3. Sustainability. Responsibly sourced timber has a lower carbon footprint than many man-made materials, and can even be repurposed or recycled with ease at the end of its life.
4. Value. Timber windows and doors are an attractive feature that many renters and homebuyers like to see. Upgrading your home with timber windows or a new timber entrance door can increase the value of your property, as well as improving its appearance.

Are timber windows and doors sustainable?

Timber windows and doors can be a sustainable option for your home or building project, provided that the timer has been responsibly sourced. As a natural material, timber requires less processing than man-made materials, meaning there is less waste, and it has a lower carbon footprint than plastic-based door and window materials like UPVC.

Manufacturing waste from timber can also be used to make other products and at the end of its lifespan, timber that has been used in construction can be recycled and broken down to serve a wide range of purposes. This is why eco-conscious designers and homeowners often opt for timber windows and doors, above the other materials available on the market.
